Government Seeks New Powers Sought for Surveillance
Written by bigpig
Monday, 17 September 2001
Here's a WashingtonPost.com story about the Administration and the Congress seeking new powers to fight terrorism. This is not a bad thing in itself, but care must be taken to prevent the loss of civil liberties. Over reaction is typical in times like this.

America, Stand Proud -- A Canadian's View
Written by bigpig
Wednesday, 12 September 2001
This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing, America: The Good Neighbor. "This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth." If you've only got time to read one story today, read this one.

Terrorism Conqueror's FAA
Written by bigpig
Wednesday, 12 September 2001
Looks like the FAA has bowed to the Terrorists on this one. Seems that they don't want to open the skies to commercial air liners until they feel confident that EVERY weapon can be identified in passenger's luggage or on the passengers. I've got bad news for everyone. You can't do that until you force the passengers to board completely naked and check all body cavities.... even then, people are weapons. Is this the end of Freedom? Are we going to be held hostage by a handful of zelots?

Tragedy Striking
Written by bigpig
Tuesday, 11 September 2001
I'm watching the live broadcast as the news media tries to grapple with the reality of the attack on the World Trade Center... This is not good. I'm having flash backs to Oklahoma City (April, 1995) and TWA 800 (July, 1996). In both cases, the Federal Government of the United States made overt attempts to reduce the Bill of Rights to a small pile of shredded paper. In the minds of too many Americans, giving up their freedom was a reasonable trade off of a perceived security.

One or more of my childhood friends may have died today, but I will say that, if so, those lives lost today are not more valuable than the freedoms expressly guarenteed and implied in the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights. Decide today what you believe in. Decide, because if you love the 1st and 4th ammendments (speech and unreasonable searches and seizures), then you MUST stand guard over ALL of them. Don't be fooled into thinking your federal government can protect every aspect of your life. Don't be tricked into trading parts of freedom in "reasonable" measures.

I'm thankful that my cousins are in Dallas and not New York today, but this could have happened in any large metropolitan city -- Dallas, Albuquerque, Houston, San Antonio, Denver, Seattle, Chicago, Los Angeles... and the only way to stop the risk is to illiminate your freedoms. Life includes risk.

Is Bush Pulling a Clinton by not Handing Over Documents?
Written by bigpig
Monday, 10 September 2001
This WashingtonPost.com Story, "White House Seeks to Restore Its Privileges," has all the look and feel of the Clinton administration with the Bush Whitehouse refusing to hand over documents to a Republican lead committee. Oddly enough, it's the Clinton/Gore fundraising documents they are refusing to hand over. Chris Schroeder, a Duke University law professor who served in the Clinton Justice Department: "It looks like the Bush administration is trying to reclaim the ground that Clinton gave up."...

Annie, Get Your Gun! CSU Coeds Take Up Arms Against Rapists
Written by bigpig
Saturday, 08 September 2001
Annie gets it. FoxNews.com has this story, "Fearful Female Students Take Up Arms." Although I'd have to disagree with the word "fearful" being used in the title, "Under Colorado law, people with legal permits may carry guns on campus, but students are prohibited from keeping them in dormitory rooms." Apparently, SaraJoy Pond, a 20-year-old graphics design major quoted in the article, agrees with 40 Reasons for Gun Control #8.

Reno the Thug Serious about FL Governor's Seat
Written by bigpig
Tuesday, 04 September 2001
CNN.com has this story about Janet Reno (the butcher at Waco) filing paperwork that will allow her to designate a campaign treasurer and begin to raise money for a possible run for governor. "We need somebody like you," one elderly woman told Reno. Anybody want to tell me what that means? "We need somebody like you to..." burn down our homes, steal or kill our children, tell us how to live our lives? The article draws a line between Cuban Americans and all other Florida Hispanics. That's funny. I'm niether Cuban nor Hispanic....

The ENUM - the Universal ID - the End of Privacy
Written by bigpig
Monday, 03 September 2001
The Times is runing, "One number - and no escape anywhere" about the e-number -- a universal id for receiving e-mail, phone calls, faxes, or any other kind of communication, even from technology yet to be invented. According to the article, the US has already signed on to support this. I guess nobody looked at the constitutional conflict here. One number. One number for medical records, bank records, any kind of financial, legal, personal or professional communications. One number for your government -- or anyone with access -- to monitor you, communicate with you... control you.

Janet Reno attmepts to highjack "Constitution"
Written by bigpig
Monday, 03 September 2001
Got a note from "The Liberty Committee" about a WorldNetDaily article, Washington, D.C.: the Twilight Zone. Seems that Reno and company have created the "American Constitution Society." It would be good for a laugh if it didn't hurt so bad... Here's a choice quote from the article: "For Reno and her cast of revisionists to name their new legal organization the American Constitution Society is like the Nazi Party naming itself the Society for the Preservation of Ethnic Diversity."

(more on) Racial quotas in Colleges found Unconstitutional
Written by bigpig
Tuesday, 28 August 2001
wyk sent us a repeat of the previous story, but this commentary was so good that it's worth the repeated headline: Here is the foxnews story "So long as the liberals haven't destroyed the Constitution, there is still a chance for Liberty and Freedom. Being of Cherokee Indian, Korean, Dutch and German decent, I have met up with plenty of 'racism' in my life. I learned to overcome it and move on. If certain people didn't like me, I didn't hang around. I didn't try and enact laws to force the thought police upon them, nor did I whine about it to the government. Everyone is entitled to their opinions - regardless of what they may be. Just because it doesn't make you feel comfortable, doesn't mean the state should punish someone...." There's much more below, and it's all good.

Federal Court Throws Out Race-Conscious Admissions Policy
Written by bigpig
Tuesday, 28 August 2001
FoxNews.com has this story about a 1999 challenge to the Universigy of Georgia's admission policy that awarded points to minorities if they were otherwise borderline for acceptance. "The ruling by a three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court's ruling in favor of three white women who were denied admission in 1999." If it walks like a quota and it quacks like a quota, it must be unconstitutional.

Kids And Guns: Is Gun Accessability the Problem?
Written by bigpig
Monday, 27 August 2001
Found an excellent article that Dr. Walter Williams (sometimes substitute for Rush Limbaugh) wrote addressing the question, even though he doesn't give answers. The problem is that American society has been asking the question, but the answers they've offered up so far are not answers to the question: "What is causing the violence we're seeing between children today?"
