Use to be that expectant parents accepted whatever gifts the beneficent chose to bestow upon the pending bundles of joy. But as with other values and social conventions that once guided personal behavior, this one too has been set aside by those seeking to revel in the intoxicating abandon of reckless self-absorption. For it seems there often exists a startling congruence between those lacking in taste and those deficient in individual character.
Upon marrying Maryland Governor Parris Glendening, it was initially publicized in the Washington Post that the state's new First Lady Jennifer Crawford would be doing her best to avoid the public limelight. She even refused to speak to the press at her National Governor's Association debut, going so far as to inaudibly mouth remarks in a manner not unlike that of nearly forgotten lip-syncing popstars . However, it seems her own avarice will prevent her from riding quietly into the sunset as Governor Glendening's term of office comes to an end.
According to the Washington Post, taxpayers shelled out $5,000 to install an improved fence at the Governor's Mansion to prevent her new dogs from slipping through her clutches. One state lawmaker remarked it would have been cheaper to have simply gotten a bigger dog. Yet the new bride's hankerings don't stop there.
Being that the new Mrs. Glendening is with child, the Washington Post reports, the mother-to-be filed an on-line want list at BabiesRUs.com totaling $1244.61. Frankly, it's enough to give you morning sickness. Foremost among the items on the registry epitomizing this display of wanton crassness is a $259.99 breast pump.
While there is nothing wrong with nourishing a child in such a manner since it is obviously what the good Lord intended, there was once a time such undertakings were deemed so sacred they were considered so inherently private that they were not carried out in plain view for all to see or brought up as subjects of public discussion, especially by those of elevated station. By placing her want-list online for the whole world to see, the Governor's wife has in effect made this a public matter, no doubt hoping --- as the Post so eloquently conjectures --- that the good people of Maryland for some odd reason might pick up the tab for the baby junk she desires in much the same way they provided for the dog fence. A shame she and her beloved rank among the deprived unable to provide for their newborn child.
The tastelessness does not end there. In an act of narcissistic curiosity just to see just who in the media might be logging on to the online greed sheet, the couple amended their list with April Fools headlines they were expecting twins. My bother Carl wryly wonders if the entire Glendening occupation of office has been an extended April Fools joke.
Those who do break down and purchase the Glendenings any of the items on the list end up supporting the questionable behavior of this prominent couple by doing so. It is one thing to have done wrong, learned from your transgressions, and gone on with your life in a spirit of humility and contrition; quite another to flaunt your mistake and expect to be awarded for it in the process.
Governor Glendening and Miss Crawford were married January 25th. Their new baby is due August 18th. It doesn't take a Mathematician or PhD in Biology to realize that this couple was in the family before ever reaching the altar.
No one should be surprised, being a few months ago the Washington Post caught the Governor going into Jennifer Crawford's residence and not emerging until the next morning. I don't imagine they simply lost track of time that evening engrossed in the complexities of state politics.
Some libertines might contend this affair is simply none of the public's concern. As a 59 year-old man, the Governor should have known better than to cavort around indecently with someone over 20 years his junior (maybe when their relationship is over, she can find solace with Glendenings 20-some-year-old son being she is closer in age to him than her own husband). And being that Parris was married at the time to another woman, why should the people of Maryland trust him when evidently his wife could not afford to?
There is more making this story newsworthy beyond the obvious adultery and fornication, titillating as these may be. Setting the matters of perjury and the ensuing cover-up aside, from a certain perspective the libidinous exploits of Governor Glendening may have descended into pits of corruption surpassing those wallowed in by Bill Clinton.
For while Monica Lewinsky was simply a floozy intern, Miss Crawford wielded considerably more influence as one of Governor Glendening's key advisors on environmental policy. Do you honestly believe Parris could remain objective regarding this vital area of public policy when he had such a vested in interest in pleasing one of the particular parties pandering for his favor? Takes lobbying to a whole new level and gives campaign contribution a whole new meaning doesn't it?
As the head of the Maryland state government, shouldn't Governor Glendening be bound by the laws governing the rest of the state? Can anyone tell me why shacking up with one of your chief aides is not a conflict of interest being that such emotional baggage clearly prevents the people of Maryland from enjoying the quality of government they deserve?
Most state employees undergo training patronizing them as if they were children instructing as to the impropriety of romantic involvement with coworkers, particularly subordinates. Maybe it's time the state's highest official was subject to the same indoctrination.
Women obsessed with money, power, and influence are hard to please and bore easily, quickly discarding those wrapped around their fingers. Eventually, Governor Glendening will learn this harsh lesson with a tattered state government and another broken family left standing in the wake.
