Page 1 of 2 I can almost assure you that everyone who is a true American was sickened when viewing protesters carrying Mexican flags in opposition to the immigration Reform Bill under consideration by the Senate. This display of Mexican flags should give us a heads up concerning where the allegiance of these protesters lie. Their bellies may be in the United States, but their hearts are in Mexico. As an American of Mexican Heritage, I was incensed; and therefore, I want to set the record straight: all American Hispanics are not thrilled with illegal immigration.
I, for more than 20 years, tried desperately to bring this national circus to the attention of the American people. I wrote for several newspapers, appeared on local and national radio and TV programs and have spoken before numerous political groups to address this problem. I lived with the problem. Trust me, it was no picnic. Illegal immigration effects our communities, our state and our country at large. Never in my life (I'm 68) had I witnessed such an influx of lawlessness that I witnessed while living in North Fort Worth. To add injury to insult, politicians soon caved in to the demands of the illegals. These politicians moved to provide bilingual education, bilingual ballots, welfare aid, medical care, etc. And if such were not forthcoming for the illegal, guess who got blamed? Not Mexico, you can be sure. It was, and is as always, the citizens and government of the United States. For all the corruption that has existed for centuries within Mexico, Mexico never accepts the blame for its own social problems. In contrast, they lambaste, criticize and project blame onto our country. How does that grab you? When I, early on, addressed the dangers at our southern border, no one appeared to listen. The perception of the day seemed to be that illegal immigration was not a problem germane the populace as a whole, but a problem between the American Hispanic and the illegal Hispanic communities. White Americans did not share equal ownership with the American Hispanics. In other words, our nation was "asleep at the wheel." However, 9-11 awoke them. Let's be honest with each other here. White Americans vote in far greater numbers than do Hispanics. And most politicians (Democrats and Republicans) in our city, state, and federal government are white. Thus, which group, Whites or American Hispanics, is in the most advantageous position to solve this problem? The answer is obvious. In summation, I'm pleading with white American voters to join me in sending our politicians (Democrats and Republicans) a strong message, a message that lets them know that we, the citizens of the United States, will not tolerate illegal immigrants telling us how they will or will not obey our laws. There is not a better time for us to be heard than via the upcoming elections. James H. Reza
